The distance of the Planetary Nebula M 97 is only roughly known to be about 800 pc (2600 lightyears) in the direction of the constellation Ursa Major. The mainly green appearance is caused by the emission of OIII, the double ionized Oxygen. The nebula originates from the old, compact and hot central star of about 14th visual magnitude.
